Define the audience

Write a clear description of who will read your book.  Defining the audience at the outset will help you write to your target audience and keep you heading in the right direction.  Be as specific as you can, as this will also form an important part of your marketing plan and will have a positive effect on how your manuscript is evaluated by a publisher.

If the book is not expected to be purchased by the reader (children’s’ books for example), then you need to home in on what will capture the purchaser’s attention.  How and where do you envisage the book being sold?
