  • Powerful fiction based on contemporary subject matter the silent, secret horror of war’s aftermath; then Vietnam, now Iraq.
  • A moral dilemma that serves as a stark reminder of today’s issues regarding the after-effects of war/hostage-taking/terrorism.

Description
Set in today’s Vietnam, a quarter century after the end of the American invasion, The Desserts of War is the telling account of one doctor’s determination to right the wrongs of war and a testimonial to the stoic resilience of the Vietnamese people and their confidence in a better tomorrow. The doctor’s struggle to make a difference to the generations suffering from the effects of the American military’s use of ‘Agent Orange’ leads him to take drastic action. Action that is to truly test all his feelings of morality and brings the reader to the ‘other side’ of
hostage-taking.

Author
The author, a 1971 Canadian immigrant originally from the United States, has taught English Literature and English as a Second Language in Canada, the United States, Nigeria, China, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. He has also worked in First Nations education as a teacher, counsellor and administrator. Two teaching stints in Vietnam had a major impact on his life – personally, politically and creatively. The tragic aftermath of the
American War in Vietnam haunted him after returning home and the writing of this book served as a catharsis.

Reviews
“This book, lyrically and beautifully written, brings alive the stifling heat of the Mekong Delta, the raw pain and sorrow as well as the joy and resilience of the people who inhabit this land. It leaves us questioning, What is right? What is justice? How far should one go? …This novel is right up there at the top of what I consider excellent fiction.”
Goody Niosi, author of Magnificently Unrepentant.

“Combines a beautiful portrait of present day Vietnam, a heartbreaking love story and suspenseful political intrigue.”
W.P. Kinsella, author of Shoeless Joe, on which the film Field of Dreams was based.
